Joanne Hummel Newell

Joanne Hummel Newell is a contemporary British artist, whose practice is informed by human habits and social behaviour. Based on found materials and observational research, Newell combines collage, painting and installation, always questioning the boundary of a work of art and often pushing beyond it, moving off the space of the canvas and outside the parameters of the gallery.

Bold and brightly coloured, Newell’s aesthetic is instantly eye-catching, bringing fragments of geometry into union with one another through a series of tactile processes. Newell builds from simplicity, working with layers of cardboard and adding swathes of paint and collage, to create complex, 2-dimensional structures. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, London, Newell has received praise from head of exhibitions at Soho House, Kate Bryan, the Times, and the Observer. Her work is widely collected, and is included in public and private collections in UK, US, Hong Kong, Europe and Australia.
