Helen Cann is a contemporary author and illustrator, living and working in Brighton. Alongside producing children’s books, Cann creates limited edition prints, specialising in contemporary cartography with a sensitivity to type and graphics. Her illustrative work takes the form of watercolours and collage assemblages, often incorporating hand finished detail for a textured finish. Cann’s work is typified by an aesthetic of knowing naivety, where simple imagery and geometric shapes, often in a palette of bright, primary colours, are brought together through a series of complex and skilled techniques. The result is bold and arresting, privileging the visual for an immediate, sensory experience. Cann has won a number of illustration awards and has exhibited around the world. Her illustrations have appeared in many books, as well as being used for businesses, branding, film, and television. Clients include the BBC, Thames and Hudson, Spinel Films, and Barefoot Books.
