Contemporary artist Jaykoe explores the impact of accelerated capitalism and globalisation on urban space. Building up from drawings, Jaykoe seamlessly crosses disciplines in his innovative use of photography, sculpture, installation, neon, painting, printmaking, video and bookmaking, to create artworks that are heavily layered, like the cities they represent.
‘Parkour I’ stages a comment on urban society’s increasingly compartmentalised mentality, as capitalist pressures create social divisions. In Jaoykoe’s print, the anarchic practice of parkour comes to symbolise the artist’s ability to leap out of controlled spaces and across market-imposed parameters. Beautifully imagined onto the printed form, these near-abstracted snapshots pack a powerful and provocative punch.
