    Details

The work of Steve Smythe is flavoured by his background as a graphic designer. Smythe’s prints - which make deft use of mixed-media techniques, collage styles, and material innovation - are distinguished by their bold use of colour and compositional practices, crossing the line from graphics to art in the style of early Warhol or Paolozzi.

‘Minnie (Candy/Prussian Blue)’ employs Pop Art printing techniques to exceptional success: a photographic image of a semi-nude woman stands provocatively with a cartoon Minnie Mouse head collaged over her own. Smythe has colourised the character in washes of rich blue and candy pink to create a bold icon of contemporary urban aesthetics.
