Helen Lang Artist Biography

Helen Lang has always drawn and painted. Her father was a litho printer and the summer holidays were filled with going to work with him and getting to draw on all of the misprints. Originally from Devon, she now lives and works in South West London. Her illustrations of characters, places and animals are decorative, bright, quirky, colourful, and gently humorous. They are intricate illustrations which are essentially happy and colourful. Floral elements and natural forms are very important in her work and the ability to incorporate lettering is key to her style. Previously, Helen Lang directed other artists and creatives, working as an illustration agent for over 5 years, and in the poster publishing industry. It was in 2011 that she took the leap and went freelance. The process she follows begins with an initial pencil or pen sketch. Once she is happy with the design she composes it and completes it in watercolour, gouache and pencil. Her tools are pens, fine paint brushes, and a very, very steady hand. Inspiration for her work can come from "absolutely anywhere!" Lang is attracted to lettering and old packaging, "graffiti, music flyers, interior and music magazines, adverts" all catch her eye. She cites illustrators and product designers such as Rob Ryan, Ella Dora, Orla Kiely, Emma Bridgewater and Cath Kidston as business inspiration. The Tate Shop have ordered Helen Lang's limited edition prints and her illustrations now adorn John Lewis products in stores across the UK. She has worked on children's books which have been published with Templar books and sells her prints in numerous galleries. Helen Lang's favourite colour is Bengal Rose, "It looks amazing oozing out of a tube".
