Pakpoom Silaphan Artist Biography
Pakpoom Silaphan is a Thai artist who combines vintage advertising signs of brands such as Coca-cola and Pepsi with images of celebrity icons such as Marilyn Monroe, John Lennon and Bob Dylan. He creates his original Pop Art works using found signs onto which he adds collage and illustration with marker pen and emulsion. Silaphan uses Warhol's elevation of everyday brands to high art, and combines this with his adoration of famous figures. He also reflects on the power of advertising in his use of signs by Coca-Cola, Pepsi etc that have been created for the non western market. His inspiration comes for living in different cultures, exploring the issues of everyday life and popular culture. Pakpoom Silaphan was born in 1972 in Bangkok, Thailand. He received his BFA from Silapakom University in Bangkok before moving to England in 2002 to study printmaking at Camberwell College of Art and a Masters in Fine Art which he received from Chelsea College of Art and Design. He has exhibited all over the world including the USA, UK, France and Italy.
