Photographer View Steigman art printsSteve Steigman is best known for his image Blown Away from the 1980ﾒs Maxell cassette adverts. The ads depict a man sitting low in a (Le Corbusier) LC2 high armed chair in front being blown back by the tremendous sound from speakers in front of him.The photograph became an icon of pop culture and appeared both on Maxell products and a TV advert and has been brought back by Maxell in recent years for their audio accessories and X Games sponsorship. The model for the UK ad campaign was musician Peter Murphy of the group Bauhaus. The model for the US campaign, however, was the makeup artist hired for the shoot by photographer Steve Steigman. The Maxell photo was the brainchild of art director Lars Anderson, but Steigman made no secret that he took the photo. He even went so far as to rent an airplane that pulled a banner with the photo and his name prominently displayed as the photo credit.Steigman was one of the top advertising photographers of the 1980ﾒs, shooting campaigns for Miller Lite and Nike. His photograph of tennis great John McEnroe standing in front of the Brooklyn Bridge was one of the first Nike campaigns to use star athletes.Born in 1942 he dropped out of High School in Brooklyn and never went to school for photography. Instead Steigman began volunteering in the studio of photographer Joe Schneider, and eventually became an apprentice. He opened his own studio at the age of 21 and was known for his amazing feats of self promotion. He sadly died in 2004.
