Heralded “the Warhol of Japan,” Takashi Murakami is one of Asia’s most acclaimed contemporary artists. Known for his "Superflat” theory of art, developed in the 1990s out of an exhibition of the same name, Murakami is concerned with the relative “flatness” of Japanese visual culture, not only in antiquity, but in a radically revisioned, post World War II climate. Mixing high art with low cultures, Murakami’s brand of pop is distinctly Asian, playing with anime and kawaii (cartoon cuteness), alongside traditional ukiyo-e (Edo-era woodblocks) styles and aesthetics. Bold and bright, his works incorporate grinning flowers and cutesy cartoon characters, which become ‘flat’ icons for exploring socially complex themes from violence and death to technological dystopia.
