Elizabeth Waggett is a British fine artist, living and working in New York City. Her work is self-professedly ‘free-spirited’ portraying animals, skulls, and personal trinkets, to explore the profound relationship between value and purpose in consumer driven society. Employing skilled, traditional techniques, Waggett creates forms of modernity which confront contemporary culture and challenge her viewers’ assumptions. Each of her pieces acts as a social commentary, probing the arbitrary value that people place on inherently valueless objects, while asking humans to recognise responsibility for draining the world’s resources and mining its precious assets.

Each of her pieces stages a visual dichotomy between stripped-back monochrome and shimmering, gold leaf, using the stark contrast to represent human’s inner struggle to balance materialism and meaning. The use of black and white creates a simplicity of form which allows for an illuminating exploration of subject matter. On first look, each of Waggett’s images appear to be photographic renderings, but a closer look reveals her highly skilled, fine art techniques, which seem to pour purpose back into the objects that society has debased and devalued.

Waggett draws on her international experience, having lived in many of the world’s most vibrant cities. Her work has been exhibited across the UK, USA, and the UAE and is held in private collections in North America, Bahrain, Europe, South Africa, and the UAE. Most recently, Waggett has worked on a commission for HRH The Prince of Wales and has had a solo show at Soho House.
