Spring. A time for new beginnings, where the world becomes afresh with flora. Kick your spring cleaning into overdrive and change the place up. One artist we feel would definitely add this fresh feel to your home is the very talented draughtsman and illustrator Carne Griffiths.
Born in Liverpool in 1973, Carne Griffiths studied Illustration at Maidstone College of Art in 1992. After graduating in 1995 he was made a fellow of the college alongside friend and fellow artist Dan Baldwin, whom he later went on to curate the Shynola exhibition at Islington's Candid Arts Gallery in 1996.
Following a move, east Carne undertook an apprenticeship as a gold wire embroidery designer with M. Hand & Company. A two-year apprenticeship led to a 12-year career, becoming Creative Director, producing elaborate hand-drawn embroidery designs for a range of prestigious clients including HRH the Prince of Wales, The Sultan of Oman, Chanel and many others as well as producing designs for films The Last King of Scotland and Valkyrie.
In January 2009 Carne produced a collection of automatic drawings for his first solo show entitled 'The Seer'. The drawings revisited his former art college influences of Andre Masson, Paul Klee and Leonardo Da Vinci and were a marked departure from the formality of embroidery design.
This exhibition was the re-ignition for Carne's passion for art. In his first collection of drawings, Carne gathered together the influences from his previous work and developed his style of drawing. The Harvest collection, referenced paintings and drawings by artists such as Da Vinci, Ribera and Verrochio, and explore the freedom of the drawn line.
There is a desire to return to nature and the simpler things in life within his work yet within the flowing lines of foliage the chaos of everyday life pervades.
To this day you can see the inspiration from the greats, resonating in his iconic style.
