This museum art print is of a detail from Gustav Klimt
’s 1905 oil on canvas painting ‘The Three Ages of Woman’. The full painting depicts a little girl held in the arms of a young woman stood next to an old woman holding her head in her hand. This print is a close up detail of just the sleeping child and angelic mother with flowers in a hair. This work, which was one of Klimt’s most beloved paintings, is a fantastic example of his symbolic and allegorical art. It was one of his last multi-figured large scale allegorical paintings. It is considered to be a visual representation of the transience of life and the permanence of death. The original painting is held in the collection of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome.
