Born in Switzerland, the French illustrator, printmaker, painter and sculptor, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen began his artistic career as a designer of printed fabrics, after studying at the University at Lausanne. Theophile Steinlen then moved to Paris in 1881 with his wife, and quickly established himself in Montmartre, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life. In 1883, the illustrator Adolphe Willette introduced him to the avant-garde literary and artistic environment of the Chat Noir cabaret, and Adolphe Steinlen soon became an illustrator of its satirical and humorous journal. Adolphe Steinlen also became the principal illustrator for Bruant’s journal ‘Le Mirliton’ and a regular contributor to “Le Rire” and “Gil Blas” magazines. Inspired by thid quirky area of Paris, art prints of cats became his favourite subject to paint. At artrepublic, we stock the infamous art prints by Theophile Steinlen.
