    Christ of St John of the Cross has just returned to Scotland after six months in the US on loan to The High Museum of Atlanta for an exhibition on Salvador Dali. It will now go back on show in an improved position at its permanent home in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. It has only left the UK six times since it was bought for Glasgow's collection in 1952. The title of the painting was said to have been inspired by a drawing made by a Spanish Carmelite friar who was canonised as St John of The Cross in the 16th Century.  It was made after the saint had a vision in which he saw the crucifixion from above.  Dali painted his crucifixion scene set above the rocky harbour of his home village of Port Lligat in Spain.  $test =

    Working with the London Graphic Centre, artrepublic has organised for Ben Eine to produce an ambitious new work in London's Covent Garden, which is being unveiled today (Monday 28th March, 2011). Ben Eine has taken inspiration for this piece from the traditional London nursery rhyme ‘Oranges and Lemons’. The amazing 16 x 6 metre work will occupy a high-profile site outside the London Graphic Centre in Mercer Street, WC2 for the next six weeks. "Supporting creative people is an integral part of our business," said Shona Peel, Managing Director of London Graphic Centre. "Giving up-and-coming talented artists like Ben a space to voice and express themselves brings to life what our store is about." Lawrence Alkin, CEO of artrepublic also said: "We are delighted to continue working with the London Graphic Centre adding another breathtaking work of art to the outside of their building. Ben Eine is one of the finest street artists in the country today and we are very proud to continue working closely with him and introducing this spectacular backdrop for his work." Eine hit the headlines when his piece 21st Century City which was hanging in our Soho gallery was given as a gift by David Cameron to Barak Obama on his first state visit to the USA last year.  Ben Eine has over twenty years experience of drawing a crowd and is internationally recognized for his super-sized lettering in urban areas. He is the former master printer at Pictures On Walls publishing house, and takes deceptively simple typography to a new level with iconic lettering which graces storefront shutters and city walls throughout the world.     We have just got the latest prints in Peter Blake’s Found Art series into our Brighton and London galleries so we thought is was high time we took a closer look at this interesting series of Pop Art prints. The latest editions in the ‘found art’ series are: Winston, 24 Flags, Vera Puzzle and Playmates, all amazing large scale limited editions and a real must for Peter Blake fans. We also have some earlier prints in the series which are now close to selling out. These include the cigarette packets Phillip Morris, Laurens and Nazionali all stunning silkscreen with silver leaf, and Three Match Boxes which has areas of spot varnish used to pick out and enhance parts of this stunning print. The Found Art series is based upon one of the earliest tenets of pop art: that everyday objects can become the subject matter for fine art (imagine Warhol’s soup cans etc). However, Blake does not choose dominant commercial brands to focus upon; his interest is ‘found art’ meaning found objects that most people would consider to be valueless eg. old cigarette packets, the packaging of old children’s games, match boxes etc. This fascination with arcane and unusual objects is of course at the centre of his collecting instinct; his studio is famed for being closer to a museum of popular culture objects and printed ephemera than a typical artist’s studio. Blake wants us to see these objects in a new way; to see them as art. An interest in ‘outsider’ and commercial art has always been integral to Blake’s work. Enlarging these objects allows us to appreciate the beauty of their design, their fragility and their textural quality.  To achieve this level of detail Blake uses the latest digital technology - enabling him to blow an object up to 50 times its normal size, allowing us to view it from a completely new perspective and top see every frayed fibre/surface feature. As Blake explains, “There are literally millions of things that if you can scan them and make them 50 times bigger, they’re beautiful because of the technology. You are touching the object, so the scanner is seeing things that the human eye can’t see. The bigger you take it, the clearer it becomes. So something like a flag, each thread appears, and then on each thread, threads appear from that, so it’s almost infinity”.     ‘A Conspiracy of Clippings’ runs from 11th March 2011 - 3rd April 2011 and will show a new body of work by Alex Dipple. Including two new installations glued directly onto the gallery wall and destroyed at the end of the show.  It will also feature a unique line of dashes and hyphens and a new piece, some 3 years in planning, using the blue horizontal rules cut from the Travel supplement of the Weekend Guardian.  These works reference Islamic art. Its' search for the transcendental through mathematics and pattern making. It explores a longing to intensify experience and an understanding that the storm of media data is corrupted by the fragility of the materials used and the physical presence of the artist in every cut and placement. The laborious and robotic process also references Albert Camus' existential idea of 'rebellious repetition' whereby action creates conscious immersion in repetition to subvert the recurrence and absurdity of daily life. To accompany the exhibition, A conspiracy of clippings, Alex has created an artists edition of 'All the dots 3. The Freedom of Information Act 2000'. 'All the dots 3' uses this iconic document as a jump off point. Here all irrelevant information is removed or ignored and the text is reduced to its most basic component, the dot. The missing words haunt the space and the finished piece becomes a delicate balancing act shaped by unseen forces. 'All the dots 3' creates a coherent and appropriate political statement to both Dipple's wider body of work and to our current global times. Alex Dipple is captivated by the transitory architecture of newspapers and periodicals. Punctuation, and visual tools such as 'info graphics' and the use of colour, once intended to help readers navigate and prioritize content, become the subject of her work. Text boxes, horizontal rules and punctuation are sliced from their source and distilled into dense microbial groups. These conspiracies of clippings are re-arranged to fill spaces that hint of infinity, and to a stillness left by the settled dust of yesterdays media blizzard. These works are durational and iterative. Collected over months and years each dot, box or line is as specific as the text from which it was lifted. The tiny fragments establish physical relationships with obscure documents and newsprint ephemera. Fleeting design anomalies that evolve over periods of time, often to disappear abruptly, focus and impose restraints on Dipple's practice. There is also a closing event at the gallery Alex Dipple - In Conversation on 1 Apr 2011 - 7:00pm - 10:00pm. This informal artists talk with Neil Taylor and Harriet Murray, will offer a deeper route into the work and shed light on some of the motivations behind it. There will also be a screening of Dipple's recent short films, which serve to further explore the context for this new show.     The most expensive painting to be sold at auction Nude, Green Leaves and Bust 1932 by Pablo Picasso is now on public display for the first time ever in the UK. The work has been lent to Tate from a Private Collection and will be on display in a new Pablo Picasso room in the Poetry and Dream wing on Level 3.  Nicholas Serota, Director, Tate said: “This is an outstanding painting by Picasso and I am delighted that through the generosity of the lender we are able to bring it to the British public for the first time. Nude, Green Leaves and Bust is one of the sequence of paintings of Picasso’s muse, Marie-Thérèse Walter, made by the artist at Boisgeloup, Normandy, in the early months of 1932. They are widely regarded as amongst his greatest achievements of the inter-war period.”  Picasso first encountered Marie-Thérèse Walter in January 1927 but their relationship had to remain secret from his wife, Olga. It was only in 1931-2 that he began to make sculptures and paintings in which the manipulation of Walter’s body was explicit, complex and highly eroticised. Although Picasso had long disguised his affair with Marie-Thérèse Walter, Nude, Green Leaves and Bust is among the group of works which openly chart the obsessiveness between the lovers. It was painted on 8 March 1932 and is the most intense among the group of large nudes completed in single, sometimes consecutive, days and marking a high-point of Picasso’s creative energy. The setting (probably in the sculpture studios of the Château de Boisgeloup outside Paris) includes a secretive curtain that provides the screen onto which the sculptural bust casts a double shadow. It is as if the white of the foreground nude was, literally as well as metaphorically, illuminating the space.  After many years in private hands, Nude, Green Leaves and Bust was sold at Christie’s, New York on 4 May 2010 to a private collector for a world record price of $106.5m. Before it was sold, the work had been in the collection of LA based collectors Sidney and Frances Brody for almost six decades. They had acquired the work in 1951 from Paul Rosenberg & Co., Paris and New York whom in turn had acquired it from the artist in 1936. During that period it had been exhibited publicly only once, in 1961, to commemorate Picasso’s 80th birthday.  The lender wishes to remain anonymous.  $test =
