This dramatic museum art print is of James Abbot McNeill Whistler’s 1875 oil on panel painting ‘Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket’. The original painting is now held in the collection of the Detroit Institute of the Arts. This is one of six ‘Nocturnes’ that Whistler painted of Cremorne Gardens in London. In his depiction of the garden Whistler concentrated on the mysterious and ephemeral activities, such as the nightly display of fireworks. Here you can see the climax of one of the pyrotechnic displays which were held every evening. Affronted by this image, John Ruskin accused Whistler of “flinging a pot of paint in the public's face.” As a leading art critic of the Victorian era, Ruskin’s harsh critique of the painting caused an uproar among owners of other Whistler works.Click these words to find similar printsNorth American Impressionism Seascape Art Prints for Frames
