Zevs / Aguirre Schwarz

Contemporary artist Zevs / Aguirre Schwarz creates explicitly politicised art, combining contemporary urban styles with a Pop aesthetic for a bold and distinctive visual twist. His work enacts a comment on the pervasive effect of celebrity, corporate and commodity cultures, at once highlighting and subverting the essence of our time.

Zev’s iconic ‘Liquidated’ series transforms seemingly solid images into transient, unstable entities, to create a powerful comment on the uncertain climate of twenty-first century politics. Deformed logos and emblems - from Apple, to Google, Gucci to Chanel - show how ubiquitous the commercial and material symbols of the modern world have become, each one instantly recognisable, even when fragmented. Yet Zev’s work also reminds us that - counter to the logic of late capitalism - they are not indestructible.

As well as the use of paint drips, Zev’s techniques include using steam cleaners to create images on dirty walls, and invisible ink to create illusive paintings that only become visible under UV light: both, a profound exploration of negativity in visual art.

After years on the fringes, working as an elusive street artist, Zev has earned recognition from France’s ‘high art’ establishment, blurring boundaries between urban aesthetics, vandalism, and conceptual art.
