‘Portia’s Cake’ is a Giclée Print by contemporary photographer Matt Henry. From a limited edition of 6, the print is signed and numbered by the artist.
Matt Henry is a Brighton-based photographer, whose work explores the power of fiction through the photographic medium. Inspired by the politics and culture of 1960s and 70s America, Henry’s work is driven by an attention to style and characterisation, each photograph beautifully designed, composed, and executed. His latest project, ‘Twin Palms’ explores the lives of glamorous, monied housewives in suburban, mid-century California.
Think Stepford Wives meets Thomas Pynchon: beautiful but destructive women, roaming listlessly around modernist villas, every image suffused with the eye-popping colours of a counter-cultural acid trip.
‘Portia’s Cake’ depicts a pristine 1960s living room, fully decked out in grass-green decor. A home-baked cake sits on the glassy table, enshrined in flames, as if to symbolise the ‘feminine mystique’ of the disenchanted housewife. Arrestingly beautiful and conceptually provocative, ‘Portia’s Cake’ is a paragon of socio-political art.
