Contemporary artist Jayson Lilley works at the forefront of printmaking practices, incorporating painting and collage techniques into his process. His work is known for its urban and architectural focus reproducing iconic structures from the metropolis. His love of modernist, Art Deco and Brutalist architectural design is infectious, bleeding into his own work which is often stark and minimal, with strong impact: stripped back palettes - often concrete shades of grey - complement bold compositional techniques.
‘Paved With Gold’ depicts the rooftops of New York City, looking south from central Manhattan. The iconic Empire State Building takes centre stage, surrounded by some of the twentieth century’s finest skyscrapers. Lilley has crafted the whole print from gold - flat, golden beige against iridescent gold leaf - creating a shining sun motif in the background, so that, in his breathtaking vision, New York City’s streets really are paved with gold.
