Clare Halifax is an artist who understands the beauty of print making. Using highly skilled processes, with an impressive talent for illustration, Halifax creates prints of rich and meticulous detail, with design, pattern and colour playing crucial roles in the overall style. Halifax has produced a series of a-z animal prints, using textiles to create a picture book aesthetic. With an impressive eye for colour and composition, the animal series merges art and design, incorporating typography, texture and graphics to stunning effect. ‘O is for Owl’ is a triumph of colour and composition. Half of the print is dominated by a woven blue background; the other half shows an owl, its head visible from behind a tree trunk. There is something strangely abstract about the figurative image: though the owls head is clear, it is hard to distinguish where tree ends and owl begins, in the mesh of soft beige that Halifax has created, organically detailed like a butterfly wing. The square print is framed by a triangular stitch design with the words ‘O is for Owl’, in black sans serif font, skimming the bottom of the image. The final aesthetic sits somewhere between children’s book illustration and traditional tapestry work, for a striking effect.
