‘Nonsense 006’ is a layered Screen Print by graphic artist Steve Smythe. Printed onto 300gsm Somerset Satin Paper, using spray-paint, ink and graphite, the print is an original and is signed by the artist.
The work of Steve Smythe is flavoured by his background as a graphic designer. Smythe’s prints - which make deft use of mixed-media techniques, collage styles, and material innovation - are distinguished by their bold use of colour and compositional practices, crossing the line from graphics to art in the style of early Warhol or Paolozzi.
‘Nonsense 006’ employs bricolage technique to exceptional success: at the centre of the print, against a bright orange background, Smythe has pasted the black and white image of a figure, reclining in a garden chair, with an antlered deer-head in place of a human face.
Around the surreal character, Smythe has built up layers of collage elements, allowing roughly torn strips of colourful magazine cuttings to crowd the image.
Assembled with a keen eye for colour and compositional effect, ‘Nonsense 006’ is a triumph of contemporary urban aesthetics.
