‘Maddie’ is a Giclée print by contemporary collage artist Maria Rivans. From a limited edition of 100, the piece is signed and numbered by the artist. The original piece of collage on each edition number can be found just below the flying green bird at the top of the print. Each tiny bird on each edition is a different species.
The work of Maria Rivans is known for its mash up of surrealism meets pop-art. Her scrapbook-like collages - with their 1950s pop-culture references - have all the playful delight of an early Paolozzi, mixed with the strange surreality of a Dali, and brought up to date with a certain sophistication and quirky aesthetic, unique to Rivans.
‘Maddie’ depicts a 1930s style, black and white photograph of a woman, only her head and shoulders visible. Rivans has adorned the model with an array of colourful bricolage elements: little cut-out spades, clubs, diamonds and hearts make up the neckline of her dress, while her head is bedecked with exotic plants, birds and feathers, sprouting in a colourful mass like a beautifully organic headdress. Each print includes its own original collage element, a small bird flying at the top of the print, a different species for every number of the edition.
