The work of Kristjana S Williams is inspired by traditional crafts of fine art: with a distinctly Victoriana style and an aesthetic which recalls Chinese silk painting, Williams depicts vivid scenes and figures from the natural world using contemporary collage and print techniques. Her work explores the use of vibrant colour, clashing different shades and tones for a resultant harmony which is at once compelling and beautiful. In ‘Lear Gaukur 08’ Williams has mastered the collage technique, overlaying an abundance of detail to create a rich and striking image. In the style of a nineteenth century botanical or natural history sketch, a pink and white bird dominates the print, surrounded by delicate foliage and colourful butterflies. A recurring motif in Williams’ work, a butterfly wing obscures the face of the bird, lending a slightly surreal quality to the image, to remind us that this is the work of a contemporary artist who knows how to manipulate the traditional to startling effect. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
