‘Joe Strummer RAF’ is a Giclée print by Brighton artist Simon Dixon. Printed onto 330gsm Somerset Velvet Paper, the print is available in 70 x 70cm and 30 x 30cm, in edition sizes of 50 and 175, and is embossed and numbered.
Simon Dixon was a Brighton-based artist and print maker, whose fine art pieces centred around icons of the twentieth century. Dixon’s love of pop culture and deep interest in twentieth century history combine in a truly distinctive aesthetic: referencing 1960s Pop Art, his paintings are a big, bold and colourful reworking of the traditional portrait.
‘Joe Strummer RAF’ depicts a pop-ified portrait of the eponymous Clash frontman. Backed by a flat block of electric-blue, Strummer peers ponderously out of the print, the collars of his black jacket turned up in the style of a rebellious James Dean character. In the corner, Dixon has added a red, 5-pointed star, emblazoned with the image of a rifle and the word RAF. An iconic work of art, Dixon has captured the nonchalant cool of the punk singer, creating a modern-day print to rival Warhol’s Marilyn.
