Gavin Dobson

Gavin Dobson is a contemporary fine artist, creating limited edition screen prints as well as large-scale originals on canvas. His work is infused with a sense of nostalgia, often evoked through a keen sensitivity to colour: from bold, saturated hues, to charcoal greyscale, or delicate, washed out tones, Dobson’s eye for tonality artfully captures something of the past. His vivid paintings and prints are filled with movement: people, animals, birds, and even landscapes and objects come to life, in Dobson’s distinctive style. In this dynamic way, his work is not simply ornamentation, but an opening for feelings, thoughts, add conversation.

Having trained in fine art at Middlesex University, Dobson looked to graphic novels and 1980s American comic books for inspiration. Amongst his greatest influences, Dobson cites: Leonardo Da Vinci; Michaelangelo; Manet; Lautrec; Jenny Saville; George Perez; Frank Miller; Olivier Coipel; and Bill Sienkiewicz. Alongside screen printing, Dobson is currently working on book illustrations, including his own graphic novel, and has recently created a fine art series entitled ‘Landscapes of the Mind’, which explores both hope and depression through landscape painting. Clients include Wilkinson Press, Bloomsbury, Gaytimes, Boyz, Diva, Woodmansterne, Portfolio, The Kingshead, Oval House and Trafalgar Studios.
