The work of Kristjana S Williams is inspired, in her own words, by ‘the symmetry in all things living’. Her prints work with processes of layering, building the present onto the past and incorporating the grandeur of the natural world to create compelling and arresting imagery. ‘Fulgar og Fidrildin Pall’, part of a series of butterfly prints that Williams has produced, exemplifies these concurrent themes. The print is dominated by a large, colourful butterfly made up from different butterflies wings, small birds, feathers and plumage, to create a truly striking aesthetic. The perfect symmetry has all the shock of a Rorschach ink blot experiment, inviting the viewer to search the image for each component part. This carnivalesque butterfly takes on an otherworldly quality, vibrant in Williams’ use of rich colour and intense detail with its combination of monochrome etchings and collage style overlays. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
