Contemporary artist Jayson Lilley works at the forefront of printmaking practices, incorporating painting and collage techniques into his process. His work is known for its urban and architectural focus reproducing iconic structures from the metropolis. His love of modernist, Art Deco and Brutalist architectural design is infectious, bleeding into his own work which is often stark and minimal, with strong impact: stripped back palettes - often concrete shades of grey - complement bold compositional techniques.
‘From the Rock’ depicts the rooftops of New York City, looking south from central Manhattan. The iconic Empire State Building takes centre stage, surrounded by some the twentieth centuries finest skyscrapers from the Chrysler Building to the MetLife. The familiar skyline is detailed in, in inky black and white, with sections picked out in soft blues and reds, while the strip of sky has been finished with a sheet of gold leaf, for iridescent texture and tonality: a beautiful touch to this glorious celebration of the city.
