’Dismayland - Minnie Hiroshima 2’ is a Giclee Print by contemporary artist Jeff Gillette. From a limited edition of 40, the print is signed and numbered by the artist.
California-based artist Jeff Gillette is known for his 2010 show ‘Dismayland’, the inspiration for Banksy’s bemusement park ‘Dismaland’. His satirical paintings merge the iconography of western capitalism with the barren landscapes of third world shanty towns, calling attention to the gross hypocrisy of twenty-first century globalism.
‘Dismayland - Minnie Hiroshima 2’ depicts a cheery Minnie Mouse, waving from a crumbling billboard, which crouches in an apocalyptic landscape, filled with decay and detritus as far as the eye can see.
Gillette has emblazoned the print with the word ‘Dismayland’ in large white lettering that resembles the Disney logo, with a twist of the Gothic, to emphasise the print’s dark humour.
Gillette’s distinctive aesthetic - a unique merging of cartoonish illustration and highly skilled fine art - brilliantly captures his powerful comment on the deep rifts across contemporary cultures.
