‘Broken Orange and Yellow’ is a 4 Colour Screen Print by contemporary artist Steve Smythe. Hand painted and finished with ink and graphite on 300gsm Somerset Paper, the print is an original and is signed by the artist.
The work of Steve Smythe is flavoured by his background as a graphic designer. Smythe’s prints - which make deft use of mixed-media techniques, collage styles, and material innovation - are distinguished by their bold use of colour and compositional practices, crossing the line from graphics to art in the style of early Warhol or Paolozzi.
‘Contemplate - 4 Colour 2’ employs bricolage technique to exceptional success. An array of magazine cut outs - carefully torn scraps of image, type, and pattern - are rearranged and layered over the greyscale portrait of a woman, which Smythe has colourised in sunshine yellow. Using a bold palette of pillar-box red against inky black, Smythe brings image, colour and typography into perfect compositional union, for a for a truly beautiful work of contemporary art.
