Oli Fowler is a contemporary British artist, who specialises in screen printing and graphic design. Not limited to a single process, Fowler incorporates graphics, illustration, photography and photomontage into his work, combining these different mediums with an experimental approach. His work fuses the figurative and the abstract, exploiting innovative compositional technique, sharp, defined shapes, and a pure CMYK palette, for a bold and arresting visual quality which is attuned to all things nostalgic.
‘Betty’ depicts a greyscale, photographic portrait of a woman, crouched against a flat, yellow background. Leaving her face and hair in black and white, Fowler has colourised her loud, patterned dress in bright shades of pink, yellow and blue. The result sits somewhere between collage, illustration, and photomontage, for a uniquely characterful aesthetic, replete with 1960s overtones, while distinctly contemporary.
