The art of cartography features heavily in the work of Icelandic born artist Kristjana S Williams. With a keen eye for Victorian art and illustration, Williams has mastered a blending of the old world with the new: using modern printing and collage techniques, Williams reimagines the art of the past with a twenty-first century flare, creating unique and strikingly beautiful prints. ‘Austur Robin London 2016’ shows a small section of an antiquated map of London within a circular frame, edged with pink and red geometric border. The map is adorned with carnivalesque, Victoriana embellishment: not only familiar images from the London skyline (the Shard, St Pauls) and WIlliams’ signature flourishes, but a red-breasted robin and regal tiger are amongst the cast to be spotted in the foreground. The print is rich, busy and exciting, merging antiquated images with modern processes for a unique contemporary aesthetic. This print is signed and numbered by the artist.
