John Van Hamersveld is an American graphic artist and illustrator who designed record jackets for pop bands, since the 1960’s. Indeed, he famously designed the album jacket for the Rolling Stones' ‘Exile on Main St.’ and other albums include; ‘Hotter Than Hell’ by Kiss, ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ by The Beatles, and ‘Crown of Creation’ by Jefferson Airplane. Described as¬ a creator of icons, he is also credited with many graphics and images that identify with the West Coast of America. His poster for Bruce Brown’s classic surf film ‘The Endless Summer’ is an image that nearly everyone has seen, and an emblem for surf culture itself. He’s worked in more corporate fields as well, adding the classic logo of the ‘Fat Burger’ restaurant chain to the list. His recognisable hand has made the iconic California we know today - and maybe you have already seen his name engraved in granite along the Surfing Walk of Fame, that honours some 140 figures.
