John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 1893) was a Victorian-era painter, notable for his landscapes, townscapes and dockyards in Glasgow, Liverpool, Whitby, London and Scarborough. He specialised in a distinctive type of nocturnal townscape, usually featuring gaslights and wet streets. John Atkinson Grimshaw became particularly successful in the 1870s: he extended his subject-matter to include re-creations of ancient Greece and Rome, as well as producing paintings of fashionable modern women.
