Nicolas de Stael

Nicolas de Staël (1914 – 1955) was a French painter of Russian origin, known for his highly abstract landscape paintings. At the age of 16, Nicolas took up a course at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and discovered the works of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Matisse, Braque, Soutine and Cézanne. Over the years, he travelled widely - and after the war he quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading abstract painters of the School of Paris, and became one of the most influential European artists of the post-war period. Typically, his art prints feature luscious blocks or patches of thick paint (often applied with a knife), subtly varied in colour and texture. Towards the end of his life, he spent much of his time working in the bright lights of the South of France, resulting in art prints that were very intense in colour.
