Katsushika Hokusai was one of the most famous Japanese artists of his time and remains a hugely important figure throughout oriental art. He is best known for the series of art prints titled Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji (c. 1831) which includes perhaps his best known artwork The Great Wave of Kanagawa. These prints are famous in Japan and all over the world, and have left a lasting image in the art world. Hokusai’s artistic influence has stretched to affect the Art Nouveau style in Europe, including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Hermann Obrist, all of whom have themes similar to Hokusai’s.
