Lord Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), was a very famous English painter and draughtsman and also an occasional sculptor of the nineteenth century. His art prints depicted historical, biblical, and classical subject matter, which contributed to making him a dominant figure of late Victorian art. The recipient of many national and international awards and honours, he was well acquainted with members of the royal family and with most of the great artists, writers and politicians of this era. He traveled widely in Europe, gaining his artistic education principally in Frankfurt, Rome, and Paris - and finally settled in England in 1859. From the mid-1860’s he enjoyed a level of worldly success - and he became president of the Royal Academy, London. Intelligent, cultured, and of distinguished appearance (although rather austere), Frederic Leighton was one of the chief adornments of London society.
