In this limited edition silkscreen print James Bates has taken the simple, graphic image of a beetle and broken it down into a microcosm of activity and imagery. The idea is that the closer you look, the more you see, and what you see is not always what you get. From such a simple image a whole society of abstracted creatures and map-like worlds emerge. Within the skeletal silver insect a city-like, patterned world of characters appears. The print is created by painstakingly drawing each individual shape and character, magnified hundreds of times. Bates’ use of metallic ink gives the print a unique precious metal like appearance.
