In response to the size of its collections and the problem of choosing what to see in the Museum, the Prado has organised three routes for visitors that focus on its masterpieces. Depending on the time available for the visit, routes of 15, 30 and 50 works have been devised which cover the most important artists represented in the Museum.

Permanent Collection at Museum del Prado

Originally conceived as a Natural History Musem – a role it never came to fulfil – and built on the orders of Charles III, the building which now houses the Museo Nacional del Prado was designed by the architect Juan de Villanueva en 1785. Its purpose would remain unclear until Ferdinand VII, encouraged by his second wife Barbara of Braganza, decided to establish a Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture.
