Exhibition running from Apr 01 2008
Having been open for the last one hundred and thirty years, the Hamburg Kunsthalle museum has a rich history as well as a valuable collection of art. With help of the Hamburg Art Union and contributions of art work the gallery was opened and by 1886 the first director was appointed. With a solid collection of work beginning to be shown, the gallery was moved to create more space in 1919 under a new director. By this time artist such as Caspar David Friedrich, Philip Otto Runge, Manet, Renoir and other impressionist were part of the museums acquisitions. As with much art at this time, 74 painting were lost due to the Nazi's view on 'degenerate art' and the modern department destroyed. However, this part of the museum was soon built up again. There are now four galleries starting chronologically with the Gallery of Old Masters containing German Gothic art as well as Dutch 17th century art. Artist include Rembrandt, Van de Velde, Jan Steen and P. de Hooch. The Gallery of 19th century art houses artist such as the Romantic painters, Max Liebermann, Edvard Munch and Eduard Manet. Movements such as Der Blauer Reiter and De Bruke are also represented in the Gallery of Classical Modernism whilst The Gallery of Contemporary art is held in a new extension. The most recent developments in art, starting from the 1960's Pop Art are shown here. |
