The Royal Academy’s annual Summer Exhibition is the world’s largest open submission contemporary art exhibition. Now in its 242nd year, the exhibition continues the tradition of showcasing work by both emerging and established artists in all media including painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, architecture and film.

 This year’s co-ordinators, Royal Academicians Stephen Chambers and David Chipperfield, will select works for the exhibition around the theme of ‘Raw’.

The Summer Exhibition attracts a high volume of entrants each year with over 11,000 entries this year. The majority of selected works will be on sale, offering visitors an unrivalled opportunity to purchase original artwork by high profile and up-and-coming artists.

As is the custom the exhibition will feature work by Academicians and Honorary Academicians and include new work by artists such as Antoni Tapies, Ed Ruscha, Michael Craig-Martin, Gillian Ayres and Tracey Emin.

This year the Architecture Gallery will be located in the large Lecture Room and David Chipperfield will be curating and organising the exhibits in this space. 

Fiona Rae will be curating an invited room within the exhibition. Recent work by artists including Nicola Tyson, Gary Webb, Martin Maloney, Nigel Cooke and Richard Patterson will be included in this room.

The Summer Exhibition 2010 will include work by Academicians who have died in the past year.Work by Craigie Aitchison RA, Jim Cadbury-Brown RA, John Craxton RA, Barry Flanagan RA,Freddie Gore RA, Donald Hamilton Fraser RA, Flavia Irwin RA and Michael Kidner RA, who sadlydied in 2009, will be displayed in the Fine Rooms as an extension to the Main Galleries.

Each year, the Summer Exhibition recognises artists of exceptional merit, awarding a total of £70,000 prize money donated by commercial sponsors. Established in 1978, the Royal Academy of Arts Charles Wollaston Award is, at £25,000, one of the largest and most prestigious art prizes in Britain. Previous winners include Jeff Koons (2008), Gavin Turk (2007), Jake and Dinos Chapman (2003), Alan Charlton (2002), Marc Quinn (2001), Gerard Hemsworth (2000), David Hockney (1999), John Hoyland (1998) and R. B. Kitaj (1997).

The Selection Committee for 2010 will include Royal Academicians Olwyn Bowey, StephenChambers, David Chipperfield, Ann Christopher, Eileen Cooper, Stephen Farthing, John Hoyland, Allen Jones, David Remfry and John Wragg.
