In 1546, during the reign of Francis I, building began on a medieval fortress. After being a residence to the French Monarchy until 1682 by 1793, the evolving structure had been established by the French Republic to become a public Museum and home of a massive collection.

The national collection of the Musee d'Orsay is housed in a beautifully renovated former train station and hotel by the Seine.
