Picasso co-founded the avant-garde Cubist movement with Georges Braque, with ideas that had a huge effect on the art of the 20th century, and still inspires many today. Cubism, a language of geometric shapes and flattened space, shifted the depiction of objects from just one viewpoint to a reassembling of multiple, simultaneous viewpoints. Picasso's famous painting 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' was one of the first examples of Cubism and caused a real stir. Picasso went through many phases with his work such as his 'Blue Period' where his work was almost exclusively painted in blues and greens whilst he battled depression, and 'Rose period' during a time when he was madly in love. Picasso was inspired by contemporary issues and events, history, politics, and the work of other artists. Picasso was a real trailblazer, working in an unprecedented number of styles and influencing numerous world-famous artists and creative figures, including David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Arshile Gorky.
It's reported that Picasso's first word was 'pencil.'
Picasso was his mother's name, which the artist began to use to sign his works from 1899. He dropped his father's name, Ruiz, entirely from 1901.
Picasso had a number of romantic partners, mistresses and lovers, who he used as muses to inspire some of his most ground-breaking artworks.
Picasso's trademark was a Coco Chanel Breton striped t-shirt.
