Tamara de Lempicka biography in Biographies from the artzine on artrepublic.com

Tamara de Lempicka is best known for her stunning Art Deco paintings that capture the elegance and decadence of 1920’s cosmopolitan nobility. Art Deco embraced the machine and progress. The clean lines and neat stylised fashion suited De Lempicka very well who hated the hazy and untidy images of the Impressionist movement.

After creating such an iconic style she found it very difficult to move on from Art Deco and after her abstract works in the 1950’s were dismissed by critics, she never exhibited again. Her works now have an enduring popularity with the public for the luxurious and sensuous lifestyle they allude to.

Born in Poland in 1898 Tamara Gorska went on to marry Tadeusz De Lempicka in 1916. They both had to flee the Russian revolution and settled in Paris. Here Tamara began painting the writers, artists and members of the aristocracy who were her friends. Throughout the 20’s and 30’s she was very successful. In 1939 she moved the USA with her second husband Baron Raoul Huffner. She spent the remainder of her life in the USA, until her death in 1980.
