Greg Haberny releases exclusive new print with artrepublic in articles from the artzine on artrepublic.comartrepublic has had the pleasure of commissioning an exclusive print from internationally acclaimed artist Greg Haberny. The new print ‘Made in China’ will be in the Brighton gallery very soon but in the meantime we thought we’d introduce him to you. Haberny is an artist who sets himself no boundaries. His work is a strong personal expression and involves a very physical process mixing comic characters with dirt, spray paint, vintage pin-ups, old films, advertising and pop culture to create hugely imaginative pieces. Heavily worked, the physical process of making and the sometimes destructive nature of his methods is evident in the works. “I like to work with everything... Screws, nails, wire, tons of glues and epoxies, glass, shredded plastic, firearms, spray paint, oils, watercolours, enamel car paints, acrylics, and truck loads of dirt...Just about anything that I can get my hands on.“ Greg Haberny Such a wide range of materials allows him to explore his creativity to the limit. Often combining contrasting elements, he explores controversy and comments on what he feels is a broken society. His attempts not to be defined by any particular style is reflected in his broad range on influences from filmmakers to abstract expressionism, conceptual art, Pop Art, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg and Tracy Emin to name but a few. He grew up in a very artistic family in Connecticut, his grandmother was a painter, his father was a furniture maker and the values of hard work were instilled in him from an early age giving him the sense of determination and drive needed to pursue a career in art. Although he studied photography and filmmaking, he did not originally start as an artist. He worked for several years in the film industry, first acting then designing sets which led him to start doing street installations. Now his installation work is all consuming. Drawing on his background in set construction he has a similar approach to building up his works using a huge range of materials involving sight and sound, transforming the gallery into a totally new environment. When he exhibits in galleries he totally changes the space, literally covering it floor to ceiling, it’s an assault on the senses totally absorbing the viewer into his world. Now based in New York, he has just shown at Berlin’s Strychnine Gallery and several of his originals have sold at auction for thousands of dollars. Made in China will be a signed hand finished print finished to an exceptional standard in an edition of just 50.
