MissBugs in articles from the artzine on artrepublic.comFeatured in The Insight magazine - February 2008The dynamic duo taking over the art worldThere’s a new caped crusading, art-busting dynamic duo in town. MissBugs is an art partnership of boy and girl, anonymous of course to protect the lives of the innocent (and no-so-innocent). They spray & stick on dull London walls and produce highly sought-after silkscreen prints which are proving a big hit at artrepublic.com. He was born in Bristol in 1979 and is the creative force behind the work, and she, the muse and trusty lookout of course. Don’t call him just an artist or street artist, this man is an image-maker extraordinaire. Exploring new ways of working, new methods and techniques, MissBugs uses images to tell stories, reflect ideas, much as a photojournalist embodies a narrative with their photographs. Every screen print is unique and hand finished by MissBugs with gold leaf, ink, acrylic or aerosol, so the one you see at artrepublic will be slightly different to other prints in the same limited edition. MissBugs draws inspiration from television, cartoons, news events, celebrities and religion. Continuously exploring these areas in his work he at times takes a dark and humorous approach that makes for heady viewing. Mixing religion with pornography or looking at the art world (namely taking game swipes at Damien Hirst) with a sometime cynical eye. His use of iconic symbols as a source of inspiration with imagery from popular culture such as Bugs Bunny, He-Man, Wonder Woman or King Kong is used and remixed to represent a personal ideal or cultural stance. But sometimes, it’s just simple nostalgia for a man in a red cape and pants on the outside of his blue leggings. Catch MissBugs’ new pieces as they are published at www.artrepublic.com. |
